Treating Presbyopia with Monovision

Greater Kansas City, Missouri

Fri, 07/29/2011

While there is no cure for the age-related vision loss known as presbyopia, monovision treatment can help some patients avoid the need for bifocal glasses or contacts.

Monovision is a treatment option in which your dominant eye is focused for distance vision and your nondominant eye is focused for near and intermediate vision. Your brain gradually adjusts to using the visual information received from the dominant eye depending on where you’re vision is focused.

There are currently three options for achieving monovision:

  • Contact lenses
  • Intraocular lenses
  • LASIK

An examination with an experienced Kansas City ophthalmologist at Silverstein Eye Centers will determine if monovision is a viable option for you and which treatment method will best suit your individual condition. Patients who choose LASIK to treat presbyopia will first wear contact lenses that simulate the effect of monovision to ensure you will feel comfortable with the results.

Monovision is not for everyone. Some patients find themselves unable to adapt, while others enjoy the extended time in which they don’t need to wear corrective eyewear to compensate for age-related vision loss.

If you would like to learn more about monovision, please contact the Kansas City, Missouri, ophthalmologists at Silverstein Eye Centers.
